Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has commissioned the new Liquid Bulk Terminal at the Port of Takoradi, Western Region. The facility which was constructed by Amandi Ghana Limited comes with modern loading structures, and with a birth of minus 14 meters to receive loading vessels for all petroleum products.
The newly commissioned Liquid Bulk Terminal comes with loading arms for 5 petroleum products, and has a birth facility which is designed to support up to 60,000 tonnes of petroleum cargo carriers. It is expected to provide about 50 percent of the country’s domestic oil consumption, and enhance the transhipment of petroleum products to other countries.
Partnered by IBISTEK, a wholly Ghanaian entity, with the Ghana Port and Harbours Authority, the Takoradi Port Expansion project is being transformed into a world class marine facility. Dr. Bawumia at the commissioning of the facility said the indigenous company, IBISTEK, was quiet ambitious of the project but the President trusted in their spirit and might to make this a reality.
He added that government had within its vision, making the Western Region a petroluem hub through the port, and as well support the Integrated Aluminium and Bauxite Corporation. He added that this is a milestone and deserves commendation.
Board Chair for GPHA, Peter Mac Manu stressed that the commissioning facility is testament to their commitment to fastrack the development of the port and in line with the national development goals.
He added that the certification for the transfer of fuel via the terminal is almost complete.
It is said that the terminal will provide jobs for 100 import personnel and indirect opportunities for over 500 persons.
Minister for Western Region, Dr. Kwabena Okyere-Darko Mensah recounted that it took his effort and colleague members of parliament during opposition to argue for investment to expand the Takoradi pott, lest it was doomed.
“I’m particularly happy that when we were in opposition, I led a team of MPs to defend the expansion of the Takoradi Harbour by the case that we held at the Sekondi court.”
Dry Bulk Terminal Phase II
Adding to the infrastructure at the Port of Takoradi, the President cut sod for the Phase II of the construction of the Dry Bulk Terminal, which is christened the Atlantic Terminal Limited. With an operational capacity of just 6.5 million metric tonnes per annum for bulk cargo, this facility will bring to total the capacity of the port to handle about 18.5 million metric tonnes each year.
Work on this project is expected to be completed in second quarter of 2022, Minister for Transport Kwaku Ofori Asiamah has hinted.
