Covid-19: Death toll in Western Region hits 24

The world is probably yet to come to terms with putting the coronavirus pandemic under control with how extreme this virus is behaving lately. The virus seems to be changing, and in the process, becoming more virulent – infecting more people, and causing more deaths.

Developing continents like Africa have not been spared. South Africa has had its version of the coronavirus. Countries like Ghana have had their second wave of infections, and the country seems to be struggling to contain it.

Each day, the number of infections increases. From around one hundred infections in a single day around the early part of January to over seven hundred (700) cases a day in February tells of how bad the situation is becoming in Ghana.

The Western Region of Ghana has not been soared. Three more persons have succumbed to the coronavirus pandemic in the Western Region (WR) and have since brought the death toll to 23 as of Sunday, January 31, 2021. It has now increased to 24 deaths.

This was announced by Mr. Daniel Bomfeh, a member of the Risk Communication Team of the Western Regional Health Service, in an interview with Takoradi-based Skyy Power FM.

According to him, the total active cases had also risen to 334. He added that the cases were recorded in 10 districts of the region with Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis recording the highest of 227 cases with Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal recording the second-highest of 50 cases.

The rest are; Tarkwa 12; Ahanta West six; Shama district 15; Jomoro and Ellembele districts recording one each; Prestea four; and Wassa East and Wassa East recording nine each.

He then charged the people of the region to strictly adhere to the protocols to help avert the upsurge of the pandemic.

Ghana’s total case count now stands at 67, 782 confirmed cases with 424 deaths.

Out of the figure, 5,515 are currently active with 61,843 recoveries/discharged
