Wei Ye Oteng Lists Reasons For Poor Music Quality In Ghana

Ghanaian sound engineer Wei Ye Oteng has listed three things he believes are the reason for the poor quality in music churned out by local artistes.

On the night of Tuesday, 6 September, 2022, he was reacting to a Facebook post which expressed the view that Nigerian songs are of a superior sonic quality compared to Ghanaian songs.

In Oteng’s view, the poor quality of Ghanaian songs is due to artistes recruiting inexperienced sound engineers, sound engineers not using the right equipment and, it would seem, the do-it-yourself style of sound design that is currently in fashion.

He wrote:

1. Let’s pay the right audio engineers.

2.The engineers should invest in the proper studio equipment.

3. Laptop, 2i2 scarlet [audio interface] and two speakers do not meet the world standards.

At this point, he cited international industry practices.

“Hollywood never shoots their [A-list] movies with [an] iPhone 13 [just] because it has a 4K [camera] feature. Think about it.”

“Our industry is losing it and is that fast,” the hitmaker bemoaned.

“There is a reason why you can't get somethings by the road side. Think about it bro, quality comes with price,” he also argued.

Earlier this year, the Drum Lyne Entertainment CEO also decried the use of social media to promote songs instead of traditional media.

Wei Ye Oteng, to wit; this is Oteng, has worked with many music stars including Trigmatic, Obrafour and Barimah Sydney.
