Sekondi Market traders lament over the high rate of theft

Some traders at the Sekondi Market in the Sekondi-Takroadi Metropolis of the Western Region are lamenting the high rate of theft activities by some unscrupulous individuals at the market.

A market trader, Auntie Hannah, speaking on Skyy Power FM’s Jolly Breakfast said she has been falling victim to these theft activities at the Sekondi Market and the recent attack on her was just yesterday, as she complained that all her goods has been stolen.

She said the queen mothers (leaders of the market) have given a deaf ear to their complaints since they are not being affected by the theft activities.

Auntie Hannah says the situation is getting worse as the said perpetrators keep expanding their range of operations and have reported the issue to Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) on several occasions but nothing is being done about the situation.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the STMA, Mr. John Laste speaking to Skyy News said they are trying to collaborate with the Sekondi Regional Police Command to help curb the situation of rampant theft at the Sekondi Market.

He said, “We have done a lot of intervention but the theft cases are still at an all-time high… so the sub metro is trying to collaborate with the Sekondi Police Command to give us a patrol team that will patrol the market at prime times.”

“We will also intensify security in other areas, we are now looking at various angles to look at the necessary intervention and that will be very soon.”
