The Western Regional Deputy Communications Officer of the NDC, Ebenezer Essien, has disclosed that the proposed 24-hour economy policy bill is currently awaiting approval by Parliament.
According to him, the passage of the bill is a critical step toward the full implementation of the policy, which is designed to stimulate economic activity and create sustainable employment opportunities across the country.
When asked about the timeline for the policy’s implementation, Mr Essien noted that successive governments over the years have introduced well-intentioned policies aimed at reducing unemployment, but many of these initiatives failed to achieve lasting impact due to poor implementation and lack of continuity.
He explained that the 24-hour economy bill seeks to address these long-standing challenges by providing a structured and legally backed framework that encourages businesses and institutions to operate beyond traditional working hours.
“There have been so many policies in the country. A lot of the time, I must say, whenever there is a new government, the policy is stopped, especially when there are a lot of, you know, inefficiencies in the management or dealing with the policies. It is stopped. Now, there is a program or policy, a 24-hour economy, which we seriously discussed during our campaign, because we have issues with unemployment.,”
Mr Essien emphasized that once Parliament passes the bill into law, the 24-hour economy policy can be rolled out nationwide, paving the way for increased productivity, job creation, and expanded opportunities for workers, especially the youth.
He added that enshrining the policy in law would protect it from being abandoned or reversed by future administrations, thereby ensuring consistency, stability, and long-term economic growth.
