The US is banning all imports of crude oil from Russia, US President Joe Biden said at the White House on Tuesday.
The decision comes amid growing support from across the political spectrum for restrictions on Russian energy.
It is the first time that the US has moved ahead of its European allies on sanctions on Russia since Moscow first began the invasion of Ukraine nearly two weeks ago.
