GFA to consult politicians and stakeholders on Otto Addo’s future as Black Stars coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council is set to consult key stakeholders, including government officials and prominent politicians, before making a final decision on the future of Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

This follows an inconclusive meeting held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, to deliberate on the coach's performance and future with the national team.

Otto Addo has come under immense pressure after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking the first time in two decades the Black Stars missed out on the continental tournament.

The team finished at the bottom of Group F with just three points from six games, drawing three and losing three matches in what has been described as one of Ghana’s poorest AFCON qualifying campaigns.

Reports indicate a division within the GFA Executive Council regarding Addo’s tenure. While some members have called for his dismissal due to his inability to meet key performance indicators, others believe sacking him would further destabilize the team, citing financial implications and a history of frequent managerial changes. Some council members suggested allowing him to lead the team in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

During the meeting, Addo reportedly attributed the team’s poor showing to injuries, the unavailability of key players, and inadequate technical support. Despite these explanations, calls for changes within the Black Stars’ management have grown louder from fans and analysts alike.

GFA President Kurt Okraku has emphasized the need for thorough consultations before arriving at a decision. This approach, he explained, aims to ensure that all voices, including those of government stakeholders, are considered. A final decision on Addo’s future is expected after these engagements.
