New Takoradi residents call on NGOs and gov’t to aid build new toilet facility for community

New Takoradi, a suburb of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis are calling on NGOs and the government to help build new toilet facility in their community.

The over hundred-year-old fishing community hosting thousands of Ghanaian indigenes in the Western Region lacks standard toilet facility and the seashore has now become the only option due to the deplorable state of their old facilities.

Speaking to the assemblyman of the lower town electoral area, Mr Ofori Douchi explained that there are four (4) toilet facilities in the community but none of them is in good condition to host anybody.

This has made residents use the seashores as the next option which the act is hindering development in the community.

He also explained they have educated the people on the effects of defecating at seashores but to no avail due to the fact that people lack toilets in their homes and there is also no standard toilet facility in the community.

“People use it as an excuse that they get infected with diseases every time they visit the public toilet especially the women so they will rather go to the seashores to do their business.”

“We have about four (4) toilet facilities in the lower town but none is in a good shape, I can give you pictures of the facility and you can’t even watch it.”

Also, he indicated a lot of homes do not have toilet facilities due to the fact that the town is an old town with old buildings in which most of the toilet facilities in them are not functioning.

“We wanted to prosecute those with no toilet facilities in their homes but we extended the time due to some reasons, but for now, we are looking forward to an NGO or the government to come to our aid to build or renovate our old toilet facilities to desist residents from defecating at the seashores,” he said.

Mr Douchi also explained that a new toilet facility will be the best option as it will be less expensive to construct than to renovate the old ones.
