Kumasi Shootings Tied to Bawku Conflict, Security Reveals

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has identified possible connections between the recent wave of shootings in Kumasi and the ongoing conflict in Bawku.

Last week, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and another individual were shot and killed by unidentified assailants on motorbikes in Asawase. A separate shooting incident also occurred in Dominase, further increasing tensions in the area.

In response to these incidents, security has been tightened across Kumasi, with intensified checks and surveillance at key locations.

During an interview on Luv FM’s Luv in the Morning show, Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator Captain (Rtd) John Jabari stated that security agencies are pursuing four main suspects believed to be linked to the shootings.

“The analogy is that some of these perpetrators might be striking in the south because they have influential individuals who can fund this conflict,” Captain Jabari explained.

He mentioned that intelligence suggests individuals from Bawku living in the south might be targeted, particularly those suspected of financially supporting one faction of the Bawku conflict.

“They believe that this person is in the south, has money, and is funding one of the factions,” he added.

Captain Jabari noted that the situation has stabilized over the past 72 hours, and proactive measures are being taken to maintain calm in the region.

He emphasized that security agencies are collaborating closely with the Small Arms Commission to address arms trafficking and prevent further escalation.

“There are already enhanced measures in place to monitor arms proliferation in the region,” he said.

Meanwhile, criminologist Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware praised the security response, stating that the current measures should be adequate to intercept potential retaliatory attacks.

“The measures implemented so far are reassuring,” Dr. Opoku-Ware commented.
