The United Party (UP+) has unequivocally stated that it will not comply with any court instruction to change its name.
The party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, asserted that the name is not the exclusive property of any single group, dismissing threats of legal action as mere “wishful thinking.”
Solomon Owusu was responding to recent remarks by Tia Kabiru, Member of Parliament for Walewale, who indicated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is considering legal measures to prevent Alan Kyerematen’s group from using the United Party name.
Mr. Kabiru had previously argued that the choice of name is “problematic,” given the NPP’s historical political lineage to the original United Party (UP) tradition.
In a sharp rebuttal, Solomon Owusu suggested the Walewale MP’s comments were ill-informed and demonstrated a lack of understanding of Ghanaian law, a point Owusu attributed to the MP being an economist, not a lawyer.
Solomon Owusu in an interview on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM’s As it is in Ghana affirmed that the rebranding of the Movement for Change to the United Party was purposeful.
He highlighted the party’s core commitment: to establish Ghana as the economic powerhouse of Africa by 2040.
The UP+’s vision is hinged on a centrist position and a “UP mindset,” representing a “new dawn” intended to end political acrimony, offer a credible alternative, promote women’s inclusion, and deliver economic transformation resulting in massive job creation, as championed by leader Alan Kyerematen.
Solomon Owusu noted that while the original UP had a strained relationship with the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the current UP+ fosters positive relations with the CPP and other political entities.
He further alleged that the NPP has been “hijacked by Akufo-Addo,” transforming it into what he called the “Nana People’s Party,” and insisted that the party has lost touch with its founding roots.
On the matter of the name, Owusu was resolute: “No law court, no judge in Ghana can make us change our name.”
The United Party’s core values are centered on promoting integrity, enforcing law and order, encouraging meritocracy, and fostering patriotism. UP+ also aims to restore discipline in public life and introduce respectful language into the political discourse.
The party retains the monarch butterfly as its symbol, representing transformation, resilience, and endurance.
