Black Stars to receive no bonuses for Japan and South Korea friendlies – GFA confirms

The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has confirmed that the Black Stars will not be receiving any financial bonuses for their upcoming international friendly matches against Japan and South Korea.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Asante Twum explained that the decision was made in line with the arrangement for this international tour, which is part of the team’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Asante Twum outlined that the players will receive daily allowances, or per diems, during their stay in Asia rather than the traditional match-winning bonuses.

“No winning bonuses for Black Stars players for the Japan and South Korea friendly games; only per diems,” he stated, emphasizing the distinction between competitive fixtures and friendly matches in terms of financial incentives.

He further noted that all costs related to the Black Stars’ participation in these matches are being fully covered by the host nations, Japan and South Korea.

“These games for the Black Stars are funded by the host countries, i.e, Japan and South Korea,” he added, underlining the support provided by the organizers and the unique nature of these fixtures which are not underwritten by the GFA.

Addo has named a 22-man squad for the tour, with 18 players already in camp in Nagoya, Japan. The remaining invited players are expected to join the team today as the group finalizes preparations for the upcoming matches. The tour marks a significant step in the team’s buildup to the next World Cup qualifiers.

The team will hold its first training session today, November 12, in anticipation of their Friday encounter with Japan in the Kirin Cup.

The match against Japan is set for November 14, followed by a fixture against South Korea on November 18. Both matches are seen as crucial opportunities for Black Stars to tune up their squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup campaign.
