IEA poll shows 68% of Ghanaians back Mahama’s performance

Public support for President John Mahama remains high, despite ongoing socioeconomic challenges, that’s according to a survey by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

A press statement released on February 11, 2026 detailing the findings of the survey indicated that 68 per cent of respondents approve of the way President Mahama is handling his job, while 22 per cent disapprove and 10 per cent have no opinion.

The IEA said the survey was conducted nationwide to assess public opinion on President John Mahama’s job performance and the prevailing socioeconomic pressures, including the cost of food, consumer goods, and unemployment.

The poll which sampled the views of over 1,000 people across all regions of Ghana was conducted in December 2025.

Despite the relatively high approval rating, the results show that although most people believe the president is leading the country in the right direction, challenges related to basic necessities remain unresolved and require his urgent attention.

A deep public concern about the rising cost of living was observed. Seven out of ten Ghanaians said they are very concerned about the price of food and other consumer items.

46% of respondents identify unemployment as the most pressing national issue, making joblessness the most frequently mentioned concern. This highlights the central role of employment in public perceptions of national well-being.

The second most cited challenge, mentioned by 30% of respondents, is illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The IEA indicated that although support for the  President’s performance remains high, there are widespread concern about the cost of living, along with persistent anxiety over unemployment and illegal mining, which highlights significant challenges that continue to affect citizens.

The findings suggests that continued efforts will be needed to address citizens’ concerns and broaden public confidence.
