The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has extended vital livelihood support to 60 Persons Living With Disabilities, presenting them with various income-generating tools and equipment valued at GH₵265,137.
The items, which included milling machines, deep freezers, ice chests, industrial sewing machines, barbering tools and other essential tools were funded through the Assembly’s statutory 3% allocation from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) dedicated to supporting persons with disabilities.
The initiative aims to provide beneficiaries with the necessary resources to improve their living conditions and enhance their economic independence.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Frederick Faidoo, reaffirmed government’s commitment to building an inclusive society where no individual is left behind.
He emphasized that empowering persons with disabilities remains a key priority in the Assembly’s development agenda.
He called on the public to respect the rights of persons with disabilities in accordance with the Disability Act, noting that vulnerable groups must be given priority in public spaces to eradicate stigma and discrimination.
The MCE ceased the opportunity to admonish beneficiaries to put the items to productive use to transform their livelihoods, adding that the Assembly will deploy a monitoring team to track progress and ensure the resources are used responsibly.
He further assured individuals yet to receive support to remain patient, as upcoming phases of the program will cater for them.
Several beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Assembly for the intervention.
Metropolitan Chief Executive, Frederick Faidoo Joseph Ackon, a carpenter who received financial support, said the assistance had come at the right time as he plans to reinvest the funds into expanding his carpentry business.
