Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga and Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor will reconsider their Private Member’s Bill seeking to repeal the Act which established the Office of the Special Prosecutor – in essence scrap the Office.
This comes after President Mahama had requested the two MPs to withdraw the Private Member’s Bill tabled for the repeal of the Act establishing the Office of Special Prosecutor (OSP).
In a memorandum dated December 8, the Bawku Central MP and the South Dayi MP contended that “…operational experience since the establishment of the Office of the Special Prosecutor has revealed persistent challenges, including the duplication of constitutional prosecutorial functions of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Attorney-General, institutional friction and jurisdictional overlap resulting in delays and inefficiencies.”
They had sought to scrap the Office.
However, in a statement issued by the Presidency on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the President explained that his request for the withdrawal of the Bill stems from his public expression of support for the strengthening of the OSP as a vital agency in the fight against corruption.
Speaking on the floor of the House on Friday, December 11, 2025 after the President’s request, Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga said “on the basis of the request made to me and my colleague, the Majority Chief Whip by His Excellency, the President, I want to assure you that we will reconsider our decision.”
He continued that he believes in the wisdom of the President and trusts that with a constructive engagement with the President, the matter will be resolved.
“Mr. Speaker, you all know that two heads are better than one so if His Excellency the President also has some thoughts about it and I also add mine to his, I believe together we can find a better way of managing the situation.
“So I can assure you that I will take on board the request by His Excellency the President for us to think about our action and I can assure you that I have always had confidence in the wisdom of the President. Indeed, if I didn’t believe in his wisdom, I wouldn’t have voted him to be a President,” he stated.
